NatGeo 2011 Prize

Picture perfect Palawan. Out of around 20,000 entries from 130 countries, Filipino travel photographer George Tapan’s beautifully composed shot of Onok Island in Balabac, Palawan, won the Places category of the NatGeo Photo Contest 2011.

On the National Geographic website, competition judge Tim Laman said, “Tapan showed a perfect sense of timing and composition in the way he captured the two small human subjects in this beautiful scene, and that really made the shot.”

Another judge, Amy Toensing, commented,  ”(the) very moody, beautifully composed image, called ‘Into the Green Zone’, compellingly shows a sense of place via the dark clouds, rainbows, the spot of pink amid a palette of blues and greens, and the woman’s flowing hair.”

Magazine photographer and judge Peter Essick was also captivated by the detail of the woman’s hair. “It only fills a fraction of the picture’s real estate, but by capturing the movement at the apex, the photographer has documented a sense of style and flair.”

Budji Layug, Kenneth Cobonpue, Royal Pineda -- Pro-Bono Redesign of NAIA Terminal 1

islandsmag:

Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal I Rehabilitation and Renovation

A pro-bono proposal from Budji Layug, Royal Pineda and Kenneth Cobonpue in cooperation with the National Competitiveness Council of the Philippines.

Its time someone did something about the worst airport in the world. So we made this design because we believe that no matter how beautiful our country is, our airports give the first and last impressions. This plan is relatively inexpensive and simple to adapt. The plan also involves renovating the interiors to allow faster flow of travelers between security, immigration and departure.

The first step has been done. Lets hope our government moves on this proposal quickly.

CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La

CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, a place of personal peace, enchantment and well-being.

CHI massages and treatments are based on authentic natural healing methods found in traditional well-being practices shared by many Asian cultures.

CHI, The Spa at Shangri La’s Mactan Resort and Spa also includes a selection of treatments that showcases the well-being traditions found in Philippine culture and the many natural plants, herbs and botanical products with their potent therapeutic properties.

Surrender to the intuitive touch of our skilled therapists, within the restorative luxury of CHI, The Spa to revitalize the body and soothe the senses.

In traditional Chinese philosophy, "chi" or "Qi" is the universal life force that governs well-being and personal vitality.  For people to maintain good health, it is believed that "chi" must flow freely within the body and, when blocked, “dis-ease” and illness follow.  Movement is therefore a key element in releasing blockages.  Body massage, exercise, stretching, hydrotherapy, and movement of the mind through relaxation and meditation combine to assist the body’s natural renewal and form the basis of the CHI spa philosophy.

Using natural products and recipes, with plants, herbs, minerals and essential oils from sustainable resources, the Chinese theory of the Five Elements of metal, water, wood, fire and earth are used to harmonize the body’s positive yang and negative yin energy to restore balance and vitality.

Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa is a beautiful resort-spa in Panglao Island which is at the southernmost tip of Bohol, Philippines. It is located halfway through Panglao along its coast facing Bohol Sea. It is a sprawling property which covers 16 hectares. Topography of the resort is varied. It has a gradually ascending cliff, flat land, a ravine, caves and has a commanding view of the sea. On the higher ground of the resort, you can view a mountain with lush vegetation. Down the beach is a long stretch of white, powdery sand up to 5 kilometers, 600 meters of which is part of Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa.
The name Eskaya refers to the only known indigenous people of Bohol.
The resort is boutique in style which accounts for its exclusivity. Architecture of the building is decidedly Filipino with a splash of modern amenities. The thatched villas or “balai” in the dialect, are single-detached. These are built with sturdy construction materials, but the ample use of indigenous materials for finishing like bamboo, cogon, and wood is emphasized. Most of the villas have individual private swimming pools.
The focal point of the resort is the infinity swimming pool which definitely blends with the sea at its bluest. The spacious restaurant has a cool feeling, yet with a warm ambience and plenty of sea view and swimming pool view. Dining can also be at the beach al fresco, at the poolside and in the garden.
The caring staff make your stay more worthwhile and memorable. Their simplicity & graciousness make you feel relaxed & pampered.
Handuraw Spa is a big come-on at Eskaya. The spa is tranquil yet modern. It offers a gracious fusion of traditional therapies and modern spa technology, a melting pot of Asian healing practices and rich European spa traditions.
The landscape is naturally beautiful. You can truly appreciate beauty if you are at Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa!
Tours are part and parcel of the Eskaya experience. One should not miss the beauty of Bohol’s countryside.
